Service Description: This service provides an Index to help determine the aerial photography source and acquisition date (typically month and year) for historical air photos of Wisconsin that display in the WI DNR cached image basemap service “EN_Image_Basemap_1990s_WTM_Int”. The imagery in the historical aerial photography service mainly consists of black-and-white, leaf-off aerial photography with 1-meter pixel resolution, primarily from the USGS National Aerial Photography Program (NAPP). The years of aerial photography acquisition range from 1986 to 2001, with most counties flown between 1992 and 2000. The delineations of air photo coverage provided through this Index are approximate, and may not reflect the precise extent of corresponding aerial photography in the historical aerial photography service. The primary source of the linework in this Index is a statewide 3.75' x 3.75' quarter-quadrangle grid. Quadrangle boundaries were dissolved in areas where the source aerial photography has the same acquisition date. NOTE: Overlapping polygons in the Index often occur along county boundary lines, (which typically do not correspond to the quarter-quadrangle grid), but also inside counties where aerial photography was flown in more than one year. In most cases, seam lines or discontinuities in the air photos along county boundaries can help can users determine which of the overlapping polygons corresponds to the imagery in the historical aerial photography service. The historical aerial photography service also includes WI County-produced air photos for several counties where the WI DNR was not able to obtain USGS-produced air photos. These include Clark County (1997), Green County (1995), Jefferson County (1996), Polk County (1996), Vilas County (1996), and Winnebago County (1997). NOTE: Because some of the county-produced aerial photography presented through this service was provided for DNR internal use only, the historical aerial photography map service is intended only for internal DNR use and should not be published as a public-facing service. The historical aerial photography also includes also includes air photos produced by the Southeast Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) for the following counties: Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha. The aerial photography for these counties was flown in 2000. NOTE: This service includes several known data gaps: DNR was not able to obtain aerial photography flown during this time frame for the following USGS quarter-quads: Chappee Rapids NW, SW, SE and Resort Lake NE in Eastern Marinette County; City Point NW in Northeastern Jackson County; Abbotsford SE in Western Marathon County. For more information, contact John Laedlein, DNR/TS, (608) 264-8914.
