Service Description: The data sources for this image service are Bathymetry datasets for Lake Superior and Lake Michigan compiled by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under a program managed by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) with the cooperation of NOAA/Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, NOAA/National Ocean Service, the Canadian Hydrographic Service, other agencies, and academic laboratories. WI DNR staff downloaded the data on 2/12/2018 from the NOAA Great Lakes bathymetry site: https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/greatlakes/greatlakes.html . According to the NOAA FAQ page for Lake Superior Bathymetry (https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/dem_faq.html#sec-3), Grids extracted using NCEI's Grid Extract tool are referenced to a vertical datum of Mean Sea Level. Elevations of NOAA Great Lakes bathymetric data are in meters. The NOAA compilation of Lake Superior Bathymetry data is considered to be an incomplete, draft version. For more details, refer to the NOAA metadata: https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/docucomp/page?xml=NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC/MGG/DEM/iso/xml/greatlakes_bathymetry_lake_superior.xml&view=getDataView&header=none NOAA compiled the Lake Michigan Bathymetry data at a scale of 1:250,000, with a contour interval of 5 meters. Density of tracklines is generally about 2000m for the open lake and ranges from 200m to 600m for nearshore areas. For more details, refer to the NOAA metadata: https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/docucomp/page?xml=NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC/MGG/DEM/iso/xml/264.xml&view=getDataView&header=none WI DNR acknowledges NOAA and NCEI for making source data available.
